For years, Indian investors asked one question: when will Jio list? Now there is an answer. The Jio Platforms IPO opens for subscription on 21 October 2026 and closes on 23 October. Allotment is expected on 26 October, and listing on NSE and BSE is tentatively set for 28 October.

This guide covers what the IPO is, the numbers behind it, the risks, some unusual facts about Jio, and the biggest IPOs in history.

What Is the Jio Platforms IPO?

Jio Platforms is the company behind Reliance Jio's mobile network, home broadband, and a growing set of digital and AI products. It is a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, which is also its promoter.

The IPO is a fresh issue of up to 27 crore equity shares of ₹10 face value. There is no offer for sale by existing shareholders, so every rupee raised goes to the company. Nobody is cashing out at the IPO. The company filed its DRHP with SEBI on 19 June 2026 and its Red Herring Prospectus on 14 October 2026.

Key Details at a Glance

  • Dates: opens 21 Oct, closes 23 Oct, allotment 26 Oct, listing 28 Oct (tentative)
  • Price band: ₹1,065 to ₹1,119 per share
  • Minimum investment: about ₹13,428 (one lot at the upper band)
  • Issue type: 100% book-built, listing on BSE and NSE
  • Registrar: KFin Technologies. Kotak Mahindra Capital is among the lead managers.
  • Employee discount: ₹54 per share

At the top of the band, this could become the largest public issue in Indian history.

Why Is Jio Going Public?

According to the RHP, the money raised will mainly repay part of the borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm (RJIL), plus general corporate purposes. Listing also creates an open, tradeable market for Jio's shares for the first time.

There is a bigger story too. Investors have wanted a direct way to own Jio, and the market has wanted a pure-play bet on India's digital economy. This IPO offers both.

Jio's Financial Report Card

₹ croreFY24FY25FY26
Revenue from operations1,09,5581,28,2181,46,885
EBITDA54,95964,17076,255
Profit after tax21,42326,10930,049
ARPU (₹ per month)181.7206.2214
  • Margins: EBITDA margin stayed above 50% in all three years and reached 51.91% in FY26. Few large companies anywhere sustain that.
  • Latest quarter: Q1 FY27 revenue was ₹39,173 crore, up about 11.8% year on year, with profit after tax of ₹7,764 crore.
  • Cash flow: operating cash flow rose to ₹77,560 crore in FY26.
  • Capex falling: between FY24 and FY26, cash capex fell about 36% (from roughly ₹53,510 crore to ₹34,184 crore) while revenue grew 34% and EBITDA about 39%. The heavy 5G build-out is easing, which frees up cash.

Customers and ARPU

As of 30 June 2026, Jio had 533.3 million customers, including 284.9 million on 5G. Its 4G and 5G base is about 1.4 times that of India's second-largest operator. ARPU is the number to watch: Jio already has scale, so the question is how much each user pays. Tariff changes, data usage, and premium plans all feed into it.

Valuation: Cheap, Fair, or Expensive?

At the official price band, the illustrative post-issue equity valuation is roughly ₹9.81 to ₹10.30 lakh crore. Media reports have mentioned around $106 billion.

  • At ₹1,119, the P/E on FY26 diluted EPS of ₹33.59 is about 33.3x.
  • Brokerage estimates cite roughly 15 to 15.6 times FY26 EBITDA.

Comparing with Bharti Airtel is tricky. The IPO valuation sits above where Airtel traded on FY26 earnings, but the businesses are not like-for-like. Airtel has overseas operations, while Jio carries a bigger consumer-tech story that the market may pay a premium for.

Also note that return on net worth was only 9.42% in FY26. The equity base is enormous (including about ₹1.97 lakh crore of share premium), and returns on that capital are still building.

Strengths: Why Investors Are Excited

  1. Scale. The largest 4G and 5G base in the country.
  2. Margins above 50%. Rare in a capital-heavy industry.
  3. Falling capex, rising cash flow. Paying down debt gets easier.
  4. Rising ARPU. Each user is worth more every year.
  5. More than telecom. Broadband, cloud, enterprise services, and AI products give more than one growth lever.
  6. Marquee backers. Meta, Google, KKR, Silver Lake and others already hold stakes.

Risks: What to Watch Carefully

  • Premium pricing. At about 33x earnings, a lot of good news is already priced in. If growth slows, there is little cushion.
  • Profit quality. From April 2025, Jio extended the assumed life of certain network assets from 16 to 18 years. That lowered depreciation and added about ₹1,840 crore to FY26 pre-tax profit. Reported pre-tax profit growth was 14.88%, and would have been about 9.64% without the change. It is a legitimate accounting estimate, but it flatters growth.
  • Spectrum dues and subsidiary losses. Broadband market share, spectrum dues, and losses at some subsidiaries are under the spotlight. Read the RHP risk factors closely.
  • Competition and regulation. Indian telecom is a three-player market with heavy regulation. Tariff decisions and spectrum policy can move earnings quickly.
  • Grey market noise. Some trackers show an unofficial premium (one lists ₹252). GMP is unofficial, changes fast, and can be wrong. Never decide on it alone.

Who Can Apply, and How

  • Apply through any broker or UPI-enabled app, like any mainboard IPO.
  • Retail investors must bid for at least one lot of 12 shares.
  • Reliance Industries shareholders may get a shareholder quota, with a cutoff date and application limits. Check the eligibility details with your broker.
  • Approve your UPI mandate before the issue closes on 23 October.
  • If you are not allotted shares, refunds are expected to start on 27 October.

Unique and Interesting Facts About Jio

  1. The free-data earthquake. Jio launched commercially in 2016 with free data and calls, and changed Indian mobile pricing within months. Data went from a luxury to one of the cheapest in the world.
  2. More users than the EU has people. With 533 million customers, Jio's base is larger than the European Union's population of roughly 450 million.
  3. A $20 billion fundraising spree. In 2020, Jio Platforms raised ₹152,056 crore (about $20.5 billion) for a 32.97% stake, in the middle of the pandemic.
  4. Global giants are already inside. Meta holds about 10% and Google about 7.7%. Other early investors included Silver Lake, Vista Equity Partners, General Atlantic, KKR, Mubadala, ADIA, TPG, Intel Capital, and Qualcomm Ventures.
  5. It was once planned as an overseas IPO. Reports in 2020 said Reliance was preparing Jio Platforms for a listing outside India. Listing at home is a vote of confidence in Indian markets.
  6. A big valuation leap. The 2020 stake sales were at a valuation of $65 to $70 billion. The reported IPO valuation of around $106 billion is a big step up.
  7. Spending down, earnings up. Cutting capex by more than a third while growing EBITDA by nearly 40% in two years is a rare combination.
  8. Small bills, huge total. At about ₹215 a month, one customer pays roughly the price of a couple of coffees. Multiply by 533 million and you get the revenue of a global giant.

Top IPOs in History

Amounts are approximate, based on commonly reported figures and including over-allotment options where applicable.

RankCompanyYearRaised (approx.)
1Saudi Aramco2019$25.6bn, rising to about $29.4bn
2Alibaba2014$25bn
3SoftBank Corp2018$23.5bn
4Agricultural Bank of China2010$22bn
5ICBC2006$21.9bn
6AIA Group2010$20.5bn
7General Motors2010$20bn
8NTT Docomo1998$18bn
9Visa2008$17.9bn
10Facebook (Meta)2012$16bn

Aramco is the largest IPO ever and made the oil giant one of the world's most valuable companies. Alibaba's New York listing set a record in its day. SoftBank Corp and NTT Docomo are both telecom listings, the same sector as Jio. Facebook's debut was huge and chaotic, with trading glitches on day one.

Biggest IPOs in India Before Jio

  • Hyundai Motor India (2024): about ₹27,870 crore, the previous record.
  • LIC (2022): about ₹21,000 crore. Heavy retail interest, but it listed below the issue price.
  • Paytm (2021): about ₹18,300 crore. A cautionary tale: it listed at a steep discount and fell further.
  • Coal India (2010): about ₹15,200 crore. A blockbuster with a strong debut.

At about ₹30,213 crore, Jio would beat Hyundai's record. Globally it would still sit well below Aramco, but it would be among the largest IPOs ever.

What History Teaches Us

Big IPOs do not automatically mean big returns. Facebook struggled for months before soaring. Paytm and LIC disappointed investors on listing. Coal India and Alibaba rewarded early buyers. A great company can be a poor investment at the wrong price, and a fair price can make a solid company a good one.

So, Should You Apply?

Nobody can answer that for you, but here is a simple frame.

The bull case: India's largest telecom operator, with over 530 million customers, 50%+ margins, falling capex, rising ARPU, and a digital ecosystem that can keep growing. If you believe in long-term digital India, this is a core-holding candidate.

The bear case: At roughly 33x earnings, there is little room for error. Regulation, competition and spectrum costs are real, and part of the profit growth comes from an accounting change.

  • Think in years, not listing-day gains.
  • Read the RHP risk factors, not just headlines.
  • Do not borrow money to apply.
  • Treat GMP as gossip, not guidance.
  • Keep your position size reasonable for your overall portfolio.

Final Thoughts

The Jio Platforms IPO is more than a fundraising event. It is the public debut of a company that changed how a billion people use the internet. Whether you apply or simply watch, it will be a historic moment for Indian markets. The listing-day move tells you little about the next five years. Strong businesses reward patience, and the price you pay still decides much of your return.
